Summary

Back in the day, Guts the Black Swordsman was a top slayer for The Band of the Hawk, an elite mercenary unit led by Griffith, whose calm demeanor and callow beauty belied his fighting prowess and steel will。 While in a king's employ, the attraction between the king's daughter and Griffith and the growing favor of the king towards the Hawk leader raises the hackles of the king's jealous brother, who plots to have Griffith summarily assassinated。 But if the plot fails, the king's brother will likely have to deal with Guts and his titanic broadsword, and the results of such confrontations are rarely pretty。。。 or easy to clean up。

(Zero spoiler review)Ahhh, now were talking。 If you read my review of Berserk volume 1, you would know that I wasn't completely enamoured with the opening to this long running salvo of Guts and gore。 Although, as I hinted at in that review, things are quickly set on a firmer course at the outset of this second weighty tome。 All the meandering and haphazard storytelling hones itself to a finer point, and we begin to get an insight into what is really going on in this world。 Hallelujah, praise the (Zero spoiler review)Ahhh, now were talking。 If you read my review of Berserk volume 1, you would know that I wasn't completely enamoured with the opening to this long running salvo of Guts and gore。 Although, as I hinted at in that review, things are quickly set on a firmer course at the outset of this second weighty tome。 All the meandering and haphazard storytelling hones itself to a finer point, and we begin to get an insight into what is really going on in this world。 Hallelujah, praise the demon lord。 In fact, I was quite surprised with how quickly Miura was able to turn it around, having me go from tedium and disappointed to wide eyed engagement with the turning of a few pages。 It is as if he had a good long hard look in the mirror in between finishing the third tonkabon (deluxe volumes contain 3 tonkabon's) and starting the fourth。 Deciding that it was tie to quite screwing around and really get this mother sucker punching above its weight。 Well, Mr。 Miura, you clearly got your act together, much to my relief, and Berserk volume 2 contains a lot more of what I like, and a lot less of what I don't namely Puck and the rather boring, protracted fight scenes。 Sure, they are still present to a certain degree, but they are far more reigned in。 Miura's art has also lifted to the next level, with some of the panels being so jaw droppingly gorgeous, that you will find your eyes lingering on them, despite you desperately wanting to see what's on the next page。 His quality control seems much tighter in general, with few if any panels being clearly sub standard efforts。Writing, that funny thing books usually contain, makes an appearance here too, with my favourite moments being the small character moments between the big set piece battles。 And whilst I wasn't a fan of the furthest arc of the 'flashback' (doing my best not to impart any information) as the story progresses more and more, so to did my interest and enjoyment grow once more。No, this is still far from a perfect book。 Maybe the normative components of Japanese storytelling will keep me from ever truly loving a title as much as the more lauded of the Western comics。 It is often the books very manga-ness which for me personally, holds it back just that bit too much from verging into near masterpiece territory。 Alas, this is only volume 2, and there is a long, long way to go。 I can still heartily recommend it though。 4/5OmniBen。 。。。more

It's too bad Casca spends a large portion of this series being mute。 It makes sense, after what was done to the poor girl during the eclipse, but it doesn't do her character much justice to be pulled around like a broken thing while Guts, who also survived the eclipse, continues to fight on。 It would be nice to see her feisty nature return, like how she was in these days; though maybe a little less feisty toward Guts。 It's too bad Casca spends a large portion of this series being mute。 It makes sense, after what was done to the poor girl during the eclipse, but it doesn't do her character much justice to be pulled around like a broken thing while Guts, who also survived the eclipse, continues to fight on。 It would be nice to see her feisty nature return, like how she was in these days; though maybe a little less feisty toward Guts。 。。。more

Oh man, what a great volume。 We're still following Guts and Griffith, particularly cycling around the latter's interactions with royalty—including a princess—and the split divisions that arise。 When the next in line to the throne gets pissed off that a commoner like Griffith is being treated favorably, he decides to cook up an assassination plot。This volume is a wrecking ball, heavy with implications。 We see some of them play out here, but there's also a lot for a forthcoming volume to sort thro Oh man, what a great volume。 We're still following Guts and Griffith, particularly cycling around the latter's interactions with royalty—including a princess—and the split divisions that arise。 When the next in line to the throne gets pissed off that a commoner like Griffith is being treated favorably, he decides to cook up an assassination plot。This volume is a wrecking ball, heavy with implications。 We see some of them play out here, but there's also a lot for a forthcoming volume to sort through and resolve。 It's all very satisfying to see play out。 。。。more

I really am enjoying diving into this manga so far I have various manga in my collection yet this is my favorite series without a doubt。 I like this specific issue probably the most because it goes a lot more in depth about Griffith as well as Casca。 I’m loving this series and can’t wait to read the next one。

A lot of focus on Guts and Casca in this one, totally in line with the late 90's anime。 A very noticeable delta and something I also really appreciated was a deeper dive into Casca's backstory which was not present in the anime。 Griffith also drops some serious deep thought, that is so good that it is worthy of actually writing down and keeping it somewhere to reflect upon。 Relative to the topic of goal setting/having a dream。 Super deep and I am absolutely impressed on how creative Kentaro \Miu A lot of focus on Guts and Casca in this one, totally in line with the late 90's anime。 A very noticeable delta and something I also really appreciated was a deeper dive into Casca's backstory which was not present in the anime。 Griffith also drops some serious deep thought, that is so good that it is worthy of actually writing down and keeping it somewhere to reflect upon。 Relative to the topic of goal setting/having a dream。 Super deep and I am absolutely impressed on how creative Kentaro \Miura is。。。 and also how twisted and dark he can be as well。 Volume 6, is probably the least so far when it comes to the horror tag that Berserk rightfully has attached to it。 This is about as 'happy-go-lucky' Berserk gets or has ever been so far in the story-line。 The best magna (in my opinion thus far) continues。 。。。more

Berserk is one of the most violent and goriest manga I've ever read, but the violence and gore isn't there for shock value, instead they represent the cruel face of humanity and show how gruesome and messy war can be。 Berserk is one of the most violent and goriest manga I've ever read, but the violence and gore isn't there for shock value, instead they represent the cruel face of humanity and show how gruesome and messy war can be。 。。。more

The Golden Age ArcA fantasticly rich, beautiful and tragic story, with some of the most amazingly written plot I can think of。 Berserk starts out with a brooding, dark avenger, with little personality left。 What get most people hooked to the story at this point, is the gore, the violence, the "I don't give a F" attitude。 If you have gotten this far, then you should know that it will change and be explained。 You will get to know why Guts is the way he is。 The story of the struggler is explained。 The Golden Age ArcA fantasticly rich, beautiful and tragic story, with some of the most amazingly written plot I can think of。 Berserk starts out with a brooding, dark avenger, with little personality left。 What get most people hooked to the story at this point, is the gore, the violence, the "I don't give a F" attitude。 If you have gotten this far, then you should know that it will change and be explained。 You will get to know why Guts is the way he is。 The story of the struggler is explained。 The 4th volume starts "The Golden Age Arc", which is so immensely good, I find it hard to describe。 The story focuses on Guts' past。 How he came to become such a badass, what his childhood was like and how he met his first, and only, friends。 It is the story of comrades, success and failures。 It is the story about hope, despair, ambition and betrayal。 The first volumes of this tale, tell us about a anti-hero。 He doesn't want to be liked and he doesn't care about life。 He lives only for revenge and hatred, and has for years。 The Golden Age Arc gives us the reasons for this。 The death and betrayal that started Guts' life and how death has followed him from he was born。He starts of with a mentor, a father and people he trusts。 He ends up alone and untrusting。 He learns to trust, learns to be a human only to experience true despair, sorrow and hatred。I envy everyone who hasn't read Berserk yet。 The whole story is such a blast that the agony of the slow releases are almost bearable。 If this is your first time reading the Golden Arc, then you will probably be blown away。 Or not。 You will probably end up reading it multiple times, and finding joy and despair all over again。 。。。more

I liked getting some of Casca's backstory。 I felt bad for her lurking behind plants whileGriffith is flirting! The princess had beautiful hairstyles。 I like castle intrigue。。。I don't trust that short bald minister because he gives me Varys vibes。 Why does Casca have such light nipples and lips? I do want her haircut in the flashback section tho。 Guts was really sweet taking care of her and not being weird about her period。 Though as a whole it is kinda eyeroll that Casca is tripping up in battle I liked getting some of Casca's backstory。 I felt bad for her lurking behind plants whileGriffith is flirting! Other people have tackled the whole issue of the representation of menstruation and women's issues in this volume, on both sides, both for it being "brave" enough to mention it in the first place, but also for the gross misrepresentation that happens。 I could expound my thoughts on it but I won't - others have already said it。 I will simply say, probably my least favorite so far。 Other people have tackled the whole issue of the representation of menstruation and women's issues in this volume, on both sides, both for it being "brave" enough to mention it in the first place, but also for the gross misrepresentation that happens。 I could expound my thoughts on it but I won't - others have already said it。 I will simply say, probably my least favorite so far。 。。。more
